INTERVIEW IN DEPTH
A detailed answer and analysis of
a tough interview question from Matt & Nan DeLuca, authors of the best
selling "Best
Answers to the 201 Most Frequently Asked Interview Questions" and
"More
Best Answers to the 201 Most Frequently Asked Interview Questions"
How do you deal with an unhappy or frustrated
employee?
This is an attempt to evaluate your management and
supervisory skills; also to look at your team-building abilities. If the employee
was under your supervision, what approach would you take to counsel him/her? How
about if it was a member of your work team? Or just another fellow employee?
Now, the interviewer is not interested in
what WE would do...what would you do? Break down the problem...is the
frustration affecting his/her work? or do you think other problems might
arise? What alternatives are open to you? Do you feel you are
good at talking to people, getting them to open up? If not, then
what? Are there counselors available to employees as part of company
supported benefit packages?
You have an
exemplary employee who suddenly starts coming in late. How will
you handle this situation?
Take the employee aside and talk to the
employee in private. Mention that you've noticed the sudden change in
attendance and ask what you can do to help correct the situation.
